The school-led approach

  • The independent approach to achieve the award.
  • The award coordinator undertakes a self-evaluation and creates the school’s action plan against the award framework.
  • A dedicated school-led coach is on hand to provide support and guidance when needed, via telephone and email.
  • A verifier visits the school for a full day to assess evidence and determine if the school has met the criteria to achieve the award.

About the Wellbeing Award for Schools (WAS)

This whole-school award focuses on ensuring effective practices, procedures and policies are in place relating to the wellbeing and mental health of staff and pupils.

The award has a focus on impact and outcomes for pupils so that schools can demonstrate specific and wider impacts of wellbeing policies and interventions.

With this award, schools can:

  • show commitment to promoting wellbeing as part of school life
  • attract and retain high-quality staff
  • see improvement in pupils’ attainment and behaviour
  • encounter fewer instances of risky behaviour, antisocial behaviour, exclusions and NEETs
  • demonstrate these improvements with evidence and stakeholder views.

The adviser-led approach

  • The supported approach to achieve the award.
  • A dedicated adviser visits the school to conduct a full-day audit of the school’s provision and creates an action plan in discussion with the working group.
  • The school’s adviser provides ongoing telephone and email support.
  • An interim visit is conducted by the school’s adviser, who assesses the evidence collected and writes an interim report advising what remains to be done before verification.
  • A verifier visits the school for a half day to assess evidence and determine if the school has met the criteria to achieve the award.
